A wealthy 19th century Irish merchant, William Mulchinock, fell in love at first site with Mary O'Connor, his maid. Mary was born in Broguemaker's Lane in Tralee. Due to their different social class, their love affair never came to be. William left town and by the time he returned, years later, Mary had died. The Rose of Tralee is his love song to her. It is also now an international annual festival in Ireland.
