By the time Vivaldi was born in 1678, Venice was already a tourist town, boasting casinos, carnivals and culture.  In addition to its canals, the city came to be known for its artists, musicians and theatre.  It's been said that no city in Europe could rival Venice when it came to music, for which patrons traveled long distances to hear, in the form of operas and open-air concertos throughout the year.

Venice also had its share of orphanages -- homes for girls whose parents had abandoned them or were dead.  The Pio Ospedale della Pieta was the most famous of the four Venetian orphanages, home to as many as 5,000 girls enrolled at once.  Because music was such a hot commodity in Venice during this time, the orphanages began training their girls to that end, eventually evolving into the first conservatories.  In the same year that Vivaldi was ordained as a priest, as was a common custom for wealthy boys, he was also hired as a violin teacher at the Pieta.  As his heart was for the Pieta, he gave up the priesthood and focused on his girls.

Unlike so many composers who sought out the rich with their music in order to further their careers, Vivaldi, born into wealth, realized there are more important things than money.  So he spent his time with the overlooked ones...the ones nobody else wanted...teaching  them, investing in them, and equipping them for their future.  And in so doing, one would have to think, gaining more in return than kings could have ever paid him.
